Man to face 29 charges after Roma police allegedly bust drug operation

A 26-year-old man is set to face 26 charges included drug trafficking after an 11-month police operation, which police say will disrupt an alleged drug network in South West Queensland.

Over the course of the past year, Roma police have been working tirelessly to disrupt the alleged supply and distribution of dangerous drugs across South West Queensland.

Through Operation Whiskey Bells, championed by the Roma Criminal Investigation Branch, more than 40 people have been charged with drug-related offences since the start of 2024.

Detective Chief Inspector Garry Watts said an investigation over the course of 11 months led police to the main alleged offender.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on November 25, after a police search of two Roma properties allegedly found drug utensils, weapons and mobile devices.

One of the properties was previously searched on September 3.

The 26-year-old was charged with one count of trafficking dangerous drugs and 38 counts of supplying dangerous drugs.

Through the ongoing operation, detectives have charged more than 40 people on 90 charges in relation to drug possession and drug driving in Roma since January.

Inspector Watts thanked the community for their ongoing efforts in reporting suspicious behaviour to police.

“Illicit drugs have no place in our community and can have a devastating effect on a small rural community such as Roma,” he said.

“Through Operation Whiskey Bells, police have dismantled a drug distribution syndicate operating in our community and helped remove harmful drugs from the streets.”
