A young Roma man who tried to outrun cops before being nabbed with meth in his bumbag has pleaded with the magistrate to give him another chance.
Kelvin Shane Wyman fled from officers after they told him he was being detained for a search.
Police prosecutor Pepe Gangemi told the Roma Magistrates Court officers eventually tracked down the man 19-year-old and found a small amount of the drug in his bumbag.
Solicitor Laurie Parker said his client breached his last probation order but was eager to give it another shot.
“He has shown eagerness to do community service and would do a probation order if they were prepared to give him a go,” he said.
“I’ve spoken to corrective services and they said he would need to attend weekly for five weeks and he has agreed to that.
“Otherwise, we would just be spinning our wheels and he’d be back before the court.”
Probation officer Monique Rashford said they could offer access to external services, like Headspace which may benefit Wyman in the long run.
Magistrate Peter Saggers appeared reluctant, reminding Wyman he failed his first probation order.
“I’m second-guessing you a bit but Mr Parker and Ms Rashford say you’re keen to do it, which is a good thing,” he said.
“But don’t just agree to do the order to shut me up, you have to want to do it.
“If you keep using meth you will continue to offend, so if you want to give yourself an opportunity, then this is the way to go.”
Wyman nodded in apparent agreement.
He was given placed on probation for 10 months.
