A 26-year-old man has been sentenced after he put a man in a sleeper hold during a caravan park brouhaha.

Kaleb Geoffrey Kadel appeared in Roma Magistrates Court on September 4 and pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm while in company.

The man was charged with two co-accused on November 23, 23, after they were involved in a melee which left a man hospitalised.

Police prosecutor Ellysha Geddes told the court Kadel and two other men, one of whom was his father, assaulted another man who at the time lived at the Big Rig caravan park.

Kadel’s father, George Charles Kassulke, had his charge of assault occasioning bodily harm while in company in relation to the matter finalised in the Roma Magistrates Court on August 21 where hewas sentenced to six months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months after pleading guilty.

The court heard the fight had started over accusations that Kadel’s father had stolen some possessions from the victim, but quickly escalated with Kadel and the other co-accused using “disproportionate” violence.

Sergeant Geddes told the court Kadel attempted to use a sleeper hold on the victim, which she described as a “lateral vascular neck restraint.”

She said while none of the victim’s injuries, which included a laceration to his head and other cuts and grazes, were directly attributable to Kadel, he was responsible because he physically restrained the victim while his co-accused attacked him.

Kadel was represented by Matthew McCarthy, who said Kadel had good references from his employers and no criminal history.

He also said the 26-year-old attended an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting after the incident.

Magistrate Michael Wood said while Kadel benefited from his lack of criminal history, the violent nature of his offending meant that imprisonment was not a sentence of last resort.

Kadel was sentenced to 12 months probation, and no conviction was recorded.

Mr Wood stipulated that a condition of his probation would be attending anger management and alcohol programs.
