Cunnamulla copper theft: Two men to face court after allegedly stealing 200kg of copper

Police have charged two men for allegedly stealing more than $2500 worth of copper from a energy depot in western Queensland. Details here.

Two St George men have been charged with stealing more than $2500 worth of copper wire from a work depot.

After police investigations a search warrant was executed on a St George address, where a 38-year-old man and 45-year-old man were charged in relation to the alleged offence.

The pair allegedly stole 200kg of copper wire from the Cunnamulla Ergon Depot on Friday, November 17.

The 45-year-old St George man was charged with one count of enter premises and commit indictable offence while the 38-year-old St George man was also charged with one count of enter premises and commit indictable offence.

Both men will appear in the St George Magistrates Court on December 19.

The theft of metals has been seen by the Queensland government as a growing concern in the community. In August, a parliamentary inquiry was established to investigate how to prevent stolen metal from being disposed of and profited from through the scrap metal industry.

Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath says: “this is an issue impacting our economy and our communities, which is why we are initiating a thorough and comprehensive parliamentary inquiry.”
