Amy Louise Loom pleads guilty in Roma Magistrates Court to drink driving

A mother said the “pressures of Christmas” led to a fight with her daughter and ultimately a drink driving charge that landed her in front of a magistrate.

Drink driving: A guide to safe drinking

For one Roma family, Christmas turned ugly when a mother and daughter became involved in a physical altercation.

The alcohol-induced punch-up allegedly resulted in a few black eyes and led to the mother jumping behind the wheel while over the limit, Roma Magistrates Court heard.

Police spotted Amy Louise Loom driving a white Holden Commodore on Bungil Street at 6.49pm on New Year’s Eve.

Loom had a blood-alcohol level of 0.156 when breath tested.

She told police she had about five glasses of sauvignon blanc between 11am and 5pm, stressing she didn’t finish the bottle.

Defence lawyer Laurie Parker said his client was suffering from the pressures of Christmas and had a disagreement where a fight ensued.

“She had a fight with her daughter and (got) a couple of black eyes, she’s a recovering alcoholic,” Mr Parker said.

“She expressed her remorse to police (and has a) character reference from her employer.”

Magistrate Shane Elliott said he could understand it was a stressful situation for Loom and opted to give her the minimum disqualification period.

“To your credit you’ve been able to get your drinking under control for the most part, but obviously you’ve had a bit of a relapse due to family issues,” magistrate Elliott said.

“And to your credit again you’re engaging with counselling. That’s good you’re acknowledging that you have this issue.”

He handed Loom a $600 fine referred to SPER and disqualified her licence for 6 months.

A conviction was recorded.
