AFTER six years of studying and training, Sian-Lee Jones is the new lawyer on the (McDowall St) block.

Admitted as a solicitor in Brisbane on August 15, Miss Jones has headed back to the place she spent a year training to be a lawyer - Ferrier & Co - under the guidance of mentor Trevor May.

Her journey into law was momentous for her family, as the Warwick-born lawyer was the first to go to university.

"I got into law from doing legal studies in Year 10, I was tossing up between teaching and law and my teacher said she thought I'd do pretty well in law,” she said.

"I managed to get good grades throughout school and I like helping people which played into it as well.

"I was the first in my family to go to uni, which was a pretty big deal.”

With her partner teach- ing in Wallumbilla, Miss Jones decided to try her luck to get a traineeship out west.

"I was working as a legal assistant in a big firm in Brisbane and I didn't like it. Half the clients you didn't even meet face to face,” she said.

"I wasn't sure how to help people who I haven't even met. Having grown up in Warwick and then going to Brisbane for school I always wanted to go back to a small town.”

Her focus is on conveyancing, wills and estate planning, succession planning (especially for rural businesses), business conveyancing, leases, and she has started taking on criminal and traffic cases.

"I'm just trying to take on board anything and everything that's thrown my way,” Miss Jones said.

"We are a small team and Trevor travels to Toowoomba every second week so I just want people to know that we have a full-time solicitor here now.

"Some people have to travel to Chinchilla, and I think Roma is far enough for them sometimes.”

Having her mentor move her at last month's ceremony was a moment Miss Jones said she would never forget.

"Having him as my mentor for 12 months in the lead up to being inducted and supporting me during my assessments, it was pretty special to have him there,” she said.

"It was pretty intimidating to be in the court in front of the Chief Justice, but it was really good.”
