Lace up your boots to kick cancer to the curb

Organisers hope local community can help Relay for Life committee reach fundraising goal.

EVERY cent will be a kick in cancer's face - that's the message from Roma Relay for Life organisers ahead of this weekend's event.

With 14 teams now registered, first time competitor and organiser Tori Fleeting is hoping the community rallies around the participants to help reach the $17,000 goal.

"Everyone knows someone with cancer. I thought it was time to step up, and this year we're only running a half event,” she said.

"Anyone and everyone is welcome to come down, there will be activities for kids and then the teams will run fundraising activities.

"People can help us achieve our goal by coming down, every cent counts, and even if you can't make it you can donate online.”

Tallis Landers is one of the faces of this year's Relay, after losing his mum, Tracy, to cancer in June.

"The numbers we've had registered, I think is a true testament to the community we've got here,” he said.

"Throughout the last couple of weeks, the excitement has been building in our family. The last couple of months haven't been the easiest but the support from our community... has been amazing.

"Mum was so loved, and we're looking forward to the weekend and hope people come out to support us.”

The opening ceremony begins at 3pm Saturday at Cities Oval, with the closing ceremony set for 11.50pm.
