Donna does double duty as a host and shooter

Donna Nugent is not only a crack shot, she is the hostess with the most-ess at this year's National Trap Shoot.

DONNA Nugent has been flat out organising the ACTA Nationals in Roma, so it was a wonder she had the time to enter the A-grade Double Barrel competition, let alone take out round 1 with a perfect score.

The long-time member of the Roma Gun Club shot 50 from 50 in her round on Thursday morning, and said she's over the moon with her result, considering she has been preoccupied with the enormous amount of work that comes with being the host club.

"I have lost track of the days; it has been really hard work, not that I mind,” Nugent said.

"It is the pride we take in our club, and there is a great team of helpers who make the club what it is.

"My greatest joy was putting together a welcome pack for the shooters, which included a shotgun shell with bottle tree seeds in it, because I'm very proud of Roma” she said.

After making a perfect score in the opening round, the former state and national representative shooter said the upcoming rounds will be a challenge.

"The double-barrel event is a 50-target event that is not run on points,” she said

"Five will line up, and if you do hit it with your second barrel, it is still one, and if you miss your target it is a loss.

"To qualify, you have to shoot 50 targets, and when you've done that you go out and shoot again, and we keep going until people drop out.

"It is the best of the best in this competition.”

The National Trap competition will continue in Roma until April 7, with finals being held on Saturday and Sunday.

Only two other clubs in Australia host the nationals: Wagga Wagga and Perth.
