WITH the local government elections having been officially announced, Roma’s Ruth Golden is another local wanting to step back into the ring.

Having served as a councillor at the Quilpie and Bungil Shires for a combined 14 years and with several decades of local government experience, Ms Golden said she still had plenty she wanted to accomplish if she was elected.

Ms Golden listed tourism, community fitness and a reduction in infrastructure charges as being some of her top priorities.

“I would like to see a reduction on the cost of infrastructure charges to encourage further economic development,” she said.

“I see them as excess to the cost of starting a business here in the Maranoa.”

Ms Golden, who has worked as an engineer with the Maranoa Regional Council, said she would push for all swimming pools to be free of charge, saying it would help promote a healthier Maranoa.

“One of my goals is getting the regional swimming pools to be free to enter,” she said.

“It’s to encourage fitness and good health – why not give them free access to the pool?

“It will also discourage people from setting up their own pools, which will conserve water use.”

Ms Golden also highlighted waste management as important for the region’s future, saying she would implement recycling if elected.

“We need to improve the efficiency of our dumps and waste facilities,” she said.

“I’ had a bursary that allowed me to look at other facilities interstate to see how they run their dumps.

“I would first be introducing recycling, different hours of operation and different layouts for our dumps.”

Ms Golden said she would be banking on her experience in local government practices and protocols.
