WENDY Newman was looking to get a humble compost bin for her backyard when she had a brainwave - this could be something the entire community could do.

This week, she finally pitched her green idea to council, and in a unanimous vote, councillors resolved to move forward and investigate how to make Cr Newman's idea a reality.

"I think all of us are trying to find different ways that we can be decreasing the amount of waste we make,” Cr Newman said.

"So I was doing research on composting bins, and discovered this particular program being offered by a company, in which councils can partner with them to subsidise the private purchase of composting bins and worm farms.

"Immediately I thought it was worth having a look at.”

The company is called Compost Revolution, and in collaboration with local councils, the aim is to educate and equip residents to cut their household waste in half with composting.

Following council's resolution to investigate further, Cr Newman is hopeful a program could come to fruition in the Maranoa.

"Getting a report written means Council staff will be doing a lot of background research, and I'm hoping it will come back to say this is something we can financially afford to take on,” Cr Newman said.

"It is essential that we reduce waste, not only for the planet, but because it can save us (Council) a lot of cost in dealing with unnecessary waste.”
