Thallon Truck Pull introduces women’s competition for first time

A Queensland small town’s biennial truck pull competition is back and better than ever, and for the first time introducing a women’s competition.

A small town nestled in South West Queensland is gearing up for its biennial truck pulling competition, but this year with a big change.

In 2021, the Thallon Progress Association hosted their first truck pull – a competition of strength and teamwork, and a fete of old-fashioned country hospitality.

In the first iterations of the competition, there was only an open competition, with all genders welcome to compete.

However, for the first time in 2024, women will have their very own competition.

Thallon Progress Association president and Thallon State School P and C grants officer, Janna Spierenburg, said back in 2021, the event was an opportunity for the township to come together in a time of drought and declining population.

She said the event quickly became something everyone in the town could look forward to, and a drawcard for tourism.

“When you’re in a team, you can really do anything,” Ms Spierenburg said.

Including, evidently, hauling a 12-tonne truck for 25m.

“It’s a great fitness challenge and a fun ‘show your spirit’ challenge. It does make your arms and legs go to jelly,” she said.

Ms Spierenburg said in Thallon, people often work up to seven days a week, and the whole town feels the impact of isolation, particularly in the years following the pandemic, which put a stop to the traditional community events.

She said as well as raising spirits, the event in the last few years has also raised a substantial amount of money.

“The funds raise from the first two events raised enough money for play equipment and shade sails,” Ms Spierenburg said.

The competition is still looking for more teams to enter, and Ms Spierenburg said she’d love to see teams from other places come to compete.

“It would be great to see some away teams to show us what they’ve got,” she said.

The competition will be held on August 31.
