A Roma local has been celebrated for her achievements in rugby, becoming the latest athlete to be added to the Maranoa’s Wall of Fame.

Amy Lorenz’s photo was added to the wall at the Maranoa PCYC in Roma which celebrates the outstanding achievements of local athletes who have reached the pinnacle of Australian sport.

To have a photo added to the Maranoa’s Wall of Fame, an athlete must have represented the country at a national level and Ms Lorenz qualified by competing in the Global Youth 7s tournament held December in Auckland at the 2024 Australian under-18 Rugby 7s team.

Maranoa Regional Council Sport and Recreation spokesman councillor Peter Flynn said it was an honour to add Ms Lorenz the wall.

“Now on the wall with 35 other exceptional athletes, her achievements are inspiring not just to us at council, but to aspiring athletes across the region,” Mr Flynn said in a press release.

“The name ‘Amy Lorenz’ is a well-known within the region through her vast sporting achievements recognised through ceremonies, team meetings, and stories in multiple media outlets.

“It is important to showcase the wide range of athletic talent that comes out of the Maranoa and build our regional pride; the PCYC Wall of Fame is a great way to do this.”

Ms Lorenz said it was amazing to be added to the wall alongside the Maranoa’s greatest athletes.

“Seeing my name and photo up there with so many others I look up to is surreal,” Ms Lorenz said in a press release.

“Rugby 7s challenges me in every way, physically, mentally and emotionally and this is what keeps me coming back. It’s a sport that demands everything from you, and I love that.

“You don’t have to have it all figured out from the start you just need to be willing to work hard, open to learning new things, and keep showing up even when it’s tough. Enjoy the journey, celebrate the small wins, and remember that every setback is just a set up for a comeback.”

Amy is now part of the Reds/QAS rugby 7s squad and said she hopes to represent Australia on a national level again in the future.

Visitors can view the Wall of Fame at the Maranoa PCYC on George St, Roma.
