Bright and early on Wednesday morning, Roma residents flocked to the Roma Explorers Inn to attend an International Women’s Day Breakfast hosted by Zonta Roma.
Motivational speaker and Pittsworth resident Helen Everingham spoke to the audience about how her life changed forever after the breakdown of her marriage and death of her two sons.
As a single mother, she spoke of the pain and grief of losing her only two children in a plane crash in 2002.
“After my two boys died, I had no reason to stay in Sydney,” she said.
“So I bought a motorhome and moved up to country Queensland.
“I lived in Roma for two years, but it was a bit too far west for me, so I moved closer to Toowoomba and settled in Pittsworth.
“When you lose your sons and you have to bury your children, you learn to live with sadness.
“Talking to you is my therapy, it helps me a lot more than it helps you.”
However, Ms Everingham said attitude was the most important determining factor in your life.
“Life is going to throw you curly ones, no gets through life unscathed,” she said.
“It’s not what happens to you, it’s how you handle it.”
Ms Everingham’s biggest piece of advice was to remember that happiness was an inside job and only you had to power to change your life for the better.
“Throw away your ‘shoulds’ and ‘have tos’,” she said.
“The universe is full of abundance and we often work against it, not with it.”
Briony Burns, who studies vetinary science in Townsville, and Annabel Flower, who studies law in Brisbane, were revealed at the breakfast as the recipients of Zonta Roma Bursary, which is valued at $1500.
