A champion bodybuilder and holder of seven national records in powerlifting, Roma personal trainer Fiona Flanders can whip anyone into shape, no matter their age or fitness history.
The competitive athlete and owner of The Little Lady Who Could has been voted in by Western Star readers as Roma’s best personal trainer for 2022.
“It's just so important for everyone, but particularly for women as they age to be strong,” Ms Flanders said.
“It adds so much to your quality of life.”
The grandmother of two said her oldest client was her mother, who at 92 is just as strong as many women in their 50s.
“She’s got a great attitude. She doesn’t let anything get her down,” she said.
“She has muscle that you wouldn't expect on a little old lady. My brother and my sister live away and couldn't believe the change in her.
“I have a lot of clients that are in their 70s and above, and I think people are a lot more aware now of the importance of bone density and building muscle as you age.”
Ms Flanders started her own fitness journey at 21, competing in her first competed in bodybuilding competition before life took a different direction – leading her down the path of motherhood, owning her own catering business and eventually into her career as a teacher.
She finally went back to the gym in 2006 when a friend gave her a membership for her birthday.
“Once I went back I remembered how much I love weight training,” Ms Flanders said.
“From a competitive point of view, when you get ready for bodybuilding you have an off-season where you train really hard and build new muscle, and when you get lean to compete you see the results of everything you've done and I love that part of it.”
Ms Flanders trained for three years before getting back into competing, winning third place in Queensland’s state bodybuilding titles and then completing for Australia in the Natural Olympia, both in 2009.
She’s since won two world titles for natural bodybuilding and scored seven national titles in powerlifting, breaking two of those records in a single day with a 58.5kg bench-press at Iron Underground powerlifting gym in 2018.
Now with her certificate 4 in fitness, international sports nutrition course, and extensive wisdom gained from some of the best bodybuilding coaches in the world in tow, Ms Flanders is focusing on her business and helping her clients to achieve their goals.
“There's three things I think are really critical to get right: sleep, exercise and nutrition,” she said.
“If you get those three things in a correct balance, your quality of life just improves out of sight.
“And I see it over and over again.”
