Election results declared for Maranoa Regional Council

Wendy Taylor has been elected as the third mayor of the Maranoa Regional Council, and the first female to hold the office.

Mrs Taylor won with 3529 votes in her favour, a sweeping 47.59 per cent of the vote, with the election declared by the Electoral Commission of Queensland on March 30, 2024.

While some incumbent councillors have been re-elected, the election has generally brought drastic changes.

The Unity Maranoa group, led by Tyson Golder, made up the majority of council in the previous term. This term, John Birkett was the only Unity Maranoa member who was re-elected to chambers.

Mr Birkett, along with Cameron O’Neil, and Joh Hancock, were re-elected to council for another consecutive term. Peter Flynn has been re-elected for the third time since 2012.

Joh Hancock had the most votes in her favour, with 5693, or 10.09 per cent of the vote.

Joh Hancock has been elected for her second consecutive term on the Maranoa Regional Council.

Ms Hancock was elected for her first term in 2020, making this her second consecutive term.

Cameron O’Neil was the second most popular candidate, securing 10.05 per cent of the vote.

Cameron O’Neil is the longest standing councillor on the Maranoa Regional Council elected for the fourth time in 2024.

Mr O’Neil has been a councillor on the Maranoa Regional Council since 2012. He is the longest standing councillor in the region, and has been a councillor in each consecutive term since amalgamation.

Brendan Seawright, Jane Vincent, Meryl Brumpton and Amber Davis filled the next four seats at the table, in a remarkable result for the newcomers.

The final two seats were filled by John Birkett and Peter Flynn, who scraped in above George Ladbrook by 42 votes.

Peter Flynn has been elected to the Maranoa Regional Council for the third time since 2012.

Mrs Taylor will be sworn in, along with her new councillors on April 9 at 10am.
