Driver, horse rescued from floodwaters near Tambo

A man looking for medical attention for his horse became stranded on a major western Queensland highway due to flash flooding as emergency services came to his rescue.

A 31-year-old Blackall man and his horse have had a lucky escape after being rescued from flood waters early Wednesday morning.

The man was travelling from Blackall to Toowoomba to get surgery for his wounded horse when flash flooding across the Landsborough Highway near Tambo swept him and his horse float off the road just before 5.30am.

The driver climbed on top of the roof of his four-wheel-drive until an SES boat rescued both him and his horse without injury.

Longreach District Disaster Co-ordinator Inspector Chris Smith said the incident served as reminder to be vigilant on roads during severe weather.

“When it is dark, it is often difficult to see that a road could potentially be hazardous,” Inspector Smith said in a press release

“No matter how shallow it may look, it’s not worth risking your life or the lives of emergency services who rescue you.

“It may seem like an inconvenience, but by taking the time you need to seek alternate routes, it may just save your life.”
