Council calls for paws in pet population

MEET Raz, a staffy mix on the hunt for a new home.

If you are looking for an older gentleman that loves a good walk in the park, 8-year-old Raz could be the one for you.

The pound pup is also the face of something much bigger, as the government unleashes its message during National Desexing Month.

Last year, approximately 252 animals were collected as strays or surrendered to Maranoa Regional Council's Impound Facility alone.

Councillor Puddy Chandler, Portfolio for Community Safety said managing unwanted litters is a huge cost to the community, as well as stress to the animals and the people who have to manage them.

"We encourage everyone to desex so the population can be managed,” Cr Chandler said.

"There are a lot of animals in all of the towns in the Maranoa and we really need to make sure they are looked after - so they don't effect other people in the community.

"Animal ownership is a privilege not a right, so we need to spread the message of responsible ownership.”

This year's theme is Not Again! Dogs can have a litter of 5-8 puppies a year, and cats can have 2-3 litters a year.
