The $86 million state-of-the-art Roma Hospital redevelopment saw BESIX Watpac take home the much sought-after Project of the Year award at the Housing and Construction Awards at the weekend.
The construction group was widely-praised at the Master Builders Queensland event for its exceptional job completed to a high standard, ahead of schedule and in a remote location.
The ceremony commended Darling Downs and western builders who rose above adversity brought by ongoing trade and material shortages, and price hikes.
South West Hospital and Health Service commended the group for taking a personal approach with the local community to deliver a world-class facility, including 24 hour emergency department, operating theatres, palliative care and mental health facilities, rehabilitation gym and birthing suites.
The group was also awarded best health facilitates over $20 million.
BESIX Watpac was praised for upholding their reputation for immersing itself in the local community by creating jobs, sponsoring local events and running a crane naming competition in the schools.
A judge said the works were “purpose-built” to deal with any medical emergency in one place.
“Private enterprises are incorporated into hospital to enhance capabilities rather than transferring to metropolitan hospital for care,” the judge said.
“The builder and subcontractor have done an exceptional job to complete a project of such a high standard in a remote location.
“Not only do all the finishes stand out by the plant room is neat as well – one of the most organised plant rooms I have seen. This is a testament to the services contractors, as a new hospital includes very complex services.”
Judges noted the poor soil conditions in Roma and difficult engineering specifications.
“Due to the remoteness of the project and difficulty of obtaining materials the builder has delivered an exceptional project completed ahead of schedule,” they said.
NRG Services were named Commercial Trade Contractor of the Year for their work at the hospital also, after being engaged by BESIX Watpac to complete the electrical works.
