VISITING competitors will outnumber local fighters at the inaugural Roma Roadrunners Corporate Fight Night tomorrow, with four local lads booked to face off against a swathe of visiting boxers from Mitchell and St George.

The tri-town showdown boasts a stacked line-up of bouts, coach Ricky Schubert told The Western Star.

"There are 13 boxers from St George, seven from Mitchell and four from Roma, and our main event will feature one of our local fighters, Jesse Scantlebury, taking on Corbin Cooper from St George.

"They will be the main event, and the major supports will be Angus Mitchell fighting Gavin Taylor, from St George, in a masters fight.

"Then we have about 18 other support fights on the night,” he said.

Outside of the ring, the athletes come from all walks of life and not all are professional boxers.

"Some are actually fighters wanting to fight and who are training to do that.

"But there are some average people in the mix, including footballers who are wanting to help and support us,” Schubert said.

Outside of the ring, local businesses have also thrown their support behind the boxing show, much to the appreciation of the coach and team.

"A lot of work has gone into this and my big thanks go to Jess Pearce, FTA Accountants, Nailzroma, Roma Tools and Duff Builders for all their support to get this show up and on the road.

"It has taken months of planning and a lot of sleepless nights,” he said.

The usual boxers on the Roadrunners team are on supporter duties for the major event, which is fundraising for another show.

"This is our first corporate show and it is to raise money for our annual amateur tournament that is coming up in May,” Schubert said.

"I'll be hosting a Western Australia team consisting of three Australian champions and two state champions, and that should have a sellout crowd.

"Hopefully we can bring a lot of people in to support us this weekend so we can fund our next show,” he said.
