When Brenton ‘BJ’ Thomas went to check on one of his calving cows, he didn’t expect to see three tiny babies near the new mum.

BJ owns Varossa Brahman Stud at Baralaba and has seen his fair share of Brahman twins.

But in October,BJ and his partner Nikki got the surprise of their lives when they saw one of their cows had given birth to triplets – Milly, Molly and Mandy.

He said the cow didn’t look like she was carrying more than one calf, with the trio naturally conceived.

“She didn’t look excessively big,” he said.

“I was watching the cow thinking she was about to calve and thought something was up because she should have calved two weeks before she actually did, so I was a bit worried something bad was going wrong.

“We were just driving past and saw that she’d calved and I went over and saw one calf sitting beside her and then saw two and three.

“It was a bit of a surprise.”

BJ said two of the triplets were identical twins and were a little bit smaller than their sister.

He and Nikki gave the babies a helping hand to give them a good chance at survival.

“Usually they just get up with the first calf and take off and we’ve had a few twins and that’s what they seem to do,” he said.

“We gave them every opportunity of survival.”

BJ said calf two and three looked a bit weak when they were first born and didn’t expect all three babies to survive.

He and Nikki fed them for the first few days until they had built up their strength.

After doing a bit of research BJ found the chances of having Brahman triplets was one in three million.

“We’d never really heard of anyone around having triplets way back or recently,” he said.

“We found a couple of articles on Google that said the chances were about one in 105,000 but that seemed too small a number.

“We’ve since heard it’s probably more like one in three million, but it’s a bit hard to know exactly.”

BJ said the calves were all doing very well with mum accepting them all and keeping milk up to them.

“She’s a really good mother, she mothers all three and not just one then the others,” he said.

BJ said Milly, Molly and Mandy were all progressing very well.

“They latch on (when feeding) and she makes sure they’re all good, she’s very cautious of not stepping on them when they’re all sucking and she wants to move.

“They’re really good mates the little calves, they come running up when they see us.

“It’s a bit special.”

Milly, Molly and Mandy have been a big hit on social media also, with lots of interest on their progress from followers on the Varossa Brahman Stud Facebook and Instagram pages.

BJ said they would continue sharing the progress of how the triplets were growing up.

“It’s a bit of a unique thing, it doesn’t happen everyday,” he said.

“A lot of people have reacted to the posts we’ve done and we’ve had a lot of messages and comments.

“We went to a sale in Charters Towers and people were asking about them.”
