Nine-year-old hits impressive hole in one

More than 100 juniors from Australia as well as two overseas players will hit the Rockhampton Golf Club fairways for the US Kids Golf Foundation Australian Open.

They will compete in 13 age groups - from boys six years and under and girls eight years and under through to boys 15 to 18 years.

The tournament will be officially opened on Monday, before the two-day competition starts on Tuesday.

The six years and under, seven and eight years boys and the eight and under and nine to 10 years girls will play nine holes each day, while the older age groups will play 18.

The field includes a player from China and one from Indonesia.

Central Queenslanders Riley Milliner, Lincoln Beckett, Eli Parsons, Lachlan Williams and Zane Blackborough will tee off in the US Kids Golf Foundation Australian Open at the Rockhampton Golf Club.

Organisers have to date received 109 entries but expect they could have as many as 120 by the time registrations close on Saturday.

Among them are close to 30 Central Queenslanders who will be looking to make their mark.

The field also includes the Gold Coast’s Alicia Ludi, who is the US Kids Golf reigning world champion in the nine-10 years girls division.

Tournament director Gary Wright said it was great to have the tournament back after it was not played in 2021 due to Covid.

He was also excited for the event to be staged in a regional centre.

Wright said he knew Geoff Parsons, who was a driving force in getting the event to the Beef Capital.

“Rockhampton has a reputation for putting on great events and that was a big part of the motivation to take it there,” he said.

“We’re certainly getting great support from the ground staff, the pro shop and the junior committee.

“They’re all on board to make this a great event so I couldn’t have asked for any more.

“They’ve just gone above and beyond to make this tournament a success.”

The golfers playing the Australian Open have the chance to qualify for the world championship to be held at the prestigious Pinehurst Resort in the United States.

Local golfers Tahlia Puet, Bodee Dillon, Martin Applewaite and Lachlan Applewaite will be in the 100-plus strong field.

Wright said the course was “scaled” for the different age groups, with each of them having a different tee so they could reach the greens in regulation.

Rockhampton ground staff have installed turf inserts so the younger groups will have a grassed area to tee off from.

Play will start about 9.30am Tuesday and 7am Wednesday.

The golfers will play in their age divisions and be seeded for the final day’s play.

Those in the leading groups will have scoreboards attached to their bags so spectators can stay across the play.
