St Brendan’s College and The Cathedral College are into the semi-finals of the boys competition at the Confraternity Carnival.

After winning their opening two pool games on Monday, they both rounded out their pool games with another win apiece on Tuesday to advance to the quarter finals of the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League carnival in Mackay.

St Brendan’s beat Toowoomba’s St Mary’s College 24-14 in the quarters, while TCC survived a last-minute raid by Marymount College to claim a 14-10 win.

St Brendan’s will play defending champions Ignatius Park in Thursday’s semis, while TCC will take on St Patrick’s.

TCC is the only semi-finalist not to have previously claimed the Shield. The other three contenders have won the Shield a combined 27 times since the first carnival in 1980.

St Brendan’s charged to an 18-nil lead before St Mary’s reduced the margin to eight points.

St Mary’s had a bobbling chance to scorch downfield only for a knock-on to present an opportunity for St Brendan’s to steady the ship and claim a 10-point win.

Coach Scott Minto said his team had been improving with each game and would rest up and prepare for a blockbuster showdown with Ignatius Park, which has rattled up an aggregate score of 152-4 in its four games.

“My brothers have probably been to about 20 Confros between them and they all told me that Tuesday afternoon is the toughest part of the week,” Minto said.

“You just want to get through it and get into the semis.

“It was pleasing to get that win because the boys are starting to get used to carnival football with all its bumps and bruises.”

The pool matches in the girls competition, which has nine teams, finished on Tuesday.

The results will be assessed to determine the finalists, although Marymount College is set to play for the CQUniversity Shield on Thursday after winning its four pool matches.

Emmaus College and TCC are in contention for a finals berth after winning three of their four pool games.
