US Kids Golf Australian Open at Rockhampton Golf Club September 27, 28

More than 100 golfing young guns descended on Rockhampton for a national event this week. See the full results and all the photos here.

Yeppoon Golf Club members Isaak Jensen and Lily McGuiness are celebrating after winning their divisions of the US Kids Golf Australian Open.

Jensen was crowned boys 15 to 18 years champion after he carded an incredible 65 (seven under par) on the second day of the tournament at the Rockhampton Golf Club on Wednesday.

The 16-year-old had a 71 (one under) on the first day of competition on Tuesday to finish on 136.

He headed up a Central Queensland clean sweep in that age group, with Rockhampton’s Lincoln Beckett runner-up on 148 and Zane Blackborough third on 155.

McGuiness was a model of consistency in the girls 11-12 years division, shooting rounds of 72 each day to finish 14 shots clear of runner-up Jazarah Kamu of Brisbane.

More than 100 golfing young guns descended on Rockhampton for the event, which was hailed a huge success by everyone involved.

The event included players as young as six and under, with the course “scaled” for the different age groups, with each of them having a different tee so they can reach the greens in regulation.

During the presentation ceremony when tournament director Gary Wright asked if the event should return to Rockhampton, the crowd responded with a rousing call of “yes”.

Jensen was thrilled to claim the win in his first appearance at a US Kids Golf event.

His round of 65 included eight birdies and one bogey.

“It’s one of the best rounds I’ve ever had,” he said.

“This rates pretty highly - it’s a nice one to win.

“I was able to finish with a birdie on the last hole to make it seven under.”

Jensen said his putting was probably the strongest aspect of his game over the two days.

Jensen’s brother Riley, 15, also took home an award, winning the Caddie of the Tournament after he stepped in at short notice to carry the bag for Isaak on the second day.

McGuiness, 11, described her win as a “10 out of 10”.

“I’m really happy,” said the rising star who has been playing golf for six years.

“It feels amazing because it’s my pop’s first time caddying and he did a really good job.”

Six other players from CQ finished in the top five of their divisions.

Seven other CQ players finished in the placings, with Miriam Vale’s Cody Anderson second in boys 12 years, Rockhampton’s Thomas Dunne third in the boys seven years, Rockhampton’s Lachlan Williams third in boys 13-14 years, and Rockhampton’s Kitty Thomson third in girls 13-14 years.

Rockhampton’s Riley Milliner was fourth in the boys 12 years, RJ Pershouse fifth in boys eight years and Annabelle Sommerfeld fifth in girls eight and under.
