Rocky City’s Mackenzie Wyeth breaks record at Central Qld Swim Champs

Dozens of rising swimming stars made a big splash at the three-day carnival in Rockhampton, including one who broke a massive record. Meet all the winners here.

Mackenzie Wyeth set the pool alight, smashing a 40-year-old record in the 13 years girls 100m butterfly at the Central Queensland Swimming Championships.

The Rocky City swimmer shaved more than a second off the record of 1.05:80 set in 1985 by Gladstone’s Megan Johnston, clocking 1.04:18 in the event.

That effort earned her the Brian Thomas Trophy, presented to the swimmer who breaks the longest-standing record at the meet.

Wyeth, who was also crowned the 13 years girls age champion, was among 242 swimmers who contested the three-day event at Rockhampton’s 2nd World War Memorial Aquatic Centre.

Fellow Rocky City swimmer Amelie Smith also had a carnival to remember, finishing with a swag of awards.

The 16 years girls age champion also picked up two individual gongs for the fastest swims in the 400m individual medley and the 800m freestyle, and was the female middle distance champion.

Wyeth and Smith’s collective performances helped Rocky City take out the Martin Hanson Award for the high points club.
