The Cathedral College open boys team will be hoping home ground advantage plays in their favour as they look to score its maiden Confraternity Shield next year.

The Rockhampton school will host the prestigious Confraternity Carnival in 2025, the fifth time it has been staged in the city.

The 45th edition of Confro will run from June 30 to July 4, with games to be played at Kettle Park and Saleyards Park.

A total of 52 boys and 12 girls teams played this year at the carnival, the premier rugby league competition for Catholic and independent secondary schools in Queensland.

TCC has been among the leading contenders since it joined QISSRL in 1993.

Their girls team won the school’s inaugural Confraternity Shield last year and finished runners-up in the most recent staging.

The boys came in eighth in the top tier of the competition last week, with host school Ignatius Park taking the honours.

As well as showcasing some of the state’s leading league talent, the carnival also provides a huge economic boon, with thousands of players, officials and supporters set to descend on the city.

Principal Rob Alexander said they would experience “the great tradition of Rockhampton hospitality”.

This is the fourth time TCC has hosted the event, the last being in 2016.

“Our well-maintained venues, facilities and amenities are all conveniently located for visitors who could number in excess of 4000,” Alexander said.

QISSRL president Peter Elmore said the carnival took hard work to organise and he was grateful to have the “energy and expertise” of TCC to stage next year’s event.

“This carnival provides a significant economic injection for host cities with more than 1600 players and coaching staff participating along with their many family members who attend for the week,” he said.

“We saw again in Townsville how much this carnival means to the players who participate, their coaches and to their families.

“Memories are made at this carnival that remain with the players for many years.”
