The CQ Capras have staged an incredible comeback to keep their Queensland Cup finals hopes alive.

The Lionel Harbin-coached outfit trailed 22-nil at half-time in their elimination final against the Northern Pride but stormed home in the second half to score a memorable 30-22 victory.

The 2500-strong crowd at Browne Park erupted when prop Bailey Butler crashed over to seal the result in the 79th minute.

It was double delight for the Capras whose under-21 side toppled the first-placed Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

They held firm to score a 24-20 win to book a place in the major semi-final of the Hastings Deering Colts competition in a fortnight’s time.

Owen Pattie, Peyton Jenkins, Thallon Peters and Jeremy McLachlan scored tries, while Jenkins landed three of the four conversions.

The Capras’ men were appearing in the finals for just the third time in the statewide competition’s 26-year history and were determined to make the most of their opportunity.

But things certainly didn’t start the way they would have hoped with the northerners putting on 22 unanswered points in the first 40 minutes.

Despite the deficit, Capras’ skipper Jack Madden said there was no panic in the dressing sheds at the break.

“At half-time, we weren’t stressing or anything. Harbo was calm, we still had plenty of belief that we could come back and do it and that’s what we did,” he said.

“There’s plenty of belief in this side, we know we can win from anywhere. We’re never out, we’re never down and out, we never give up - and it showed in that second half.

‘We were all positive, unbeat, we knew we could do it. We’ve got great spirit in this team.

“They (the Pride) were winning the physical battle in the first half and in the second half we won that; we were running harder, tackling harder than them.

“We went through the middle a bit more and I thought that worked really well for us against those big boys, they were tiring out... so we knew we’d get them in the back end.”

Centre Brandon Roberts scored the Capras’ first try five minutes into the second half.

Man of the Match Lachlan Hubner then added two more before prop Tyler Szepanowski made it try number four in the 63rd minute.

Butler then crossed in the final minute, with hooker Trey Brown adding the last two points with his third conversion of the game.

Madden praised the work of Hubner, as well as Butler and lock Jamie Hill, saluting the efforts of the team’s “big boys” in the second half.

The Capras’ next opponents will be either the Burleigh Bears or the Norths Devils.

“Burleigh have been the benchmark all year, they’re the minor premiers, and obviously Norths are the (reigning) premiers,” he said.

“It’s going to be tough either way but we’re going down there to win. We’re going down there with that mindset that we can beat anyone if we get it right and that’s what we’re doing.”
