Cyclone Alfred has delayed the start to the CQ Capras season.
The men’s team was to travel to the Gold Coast to take on the Burleigh Bears in Round 1 of the Hostplus Cup on Saturday.
With the impending arrival of the cyclone in South-East Queensland, the QRL postponed a number of fixtures to the vacant weekend on the schedule on August 2-3.
Capras’ head coach Lionel Harbin said it wasn’t ideal but it was an exceptional situation.
“Obviously, the boys are pretty eager to play but it is what it is,” he said.
“We’ve got no control over it so it’s just a matter of moving on and being prepared for next week.”
The Capras will tackle Brisbane Tigers in that game at Brisbane’s Totally Workwear Stadium on March 16.
Harbin said there could well be some changes to the line-up next week, with several players back in contention for Round 2, including star prop forward Zev John.
The players would be put through an extra training session on Friday night in lieu of Saturday’s game.
Harbin said the key focus come season kickoff would be on how the team played, not who they played.
“The main thing at the start of the season is you’ve got to complete high, which we haven’t done well in the trials,” he said.
“That’s something we’ve definitely been working on at training in the last few weeks.
“We’ve been disciplined and we’ve been getting that effort defensively so if we can just tidy up our completions, we’ll give ourselves a really good opportunity of performing well.”
Harbin said he was also looking forward to what the new halves pairing of brothers Blake and Aaron Moore would bring.
“They’ve been training well and they’re great players. They add a lot to our team, not just on the field but off it as well,” he said.
“I’m really happy with how they’re progressing and I think they’re only going to get better the more game time they get together.”
