Radean Robinson cannot wait to get his first taste of international football at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup.
The talented five-eighth, who was a standout for the CQ Capras this season, will line up with Italy at the two-week tournament which kicks off on October 15 in England.
It will be an emotional journey for Robinson, who said he would be playing in memory of his late grandfather Victorio Ostelio Miglioranza, who hailed from Treviso in Italy.
Sixteen nations will be in action in what will be the biggest World Cup in history and is being touted as possibly the most competitive.
The Capras are well represented, with Robinson’s teammates Zev John, Nixon Putt and Mckenzie Yei selected for the Papua New Guinea Kumuls and Aaron Teroi representing the Cook Islands.
David Faiumu, who is a member of the club’s coaching staff, is also England-bound with the New Zealand team.
The Capras’ champion women’s fullback Tamika Upton, who won her third NRLW premiership with the Newcastle Knights last Sunday, was selected for the Australian Jillaroos but has withdrawn due to an ongoing calf strain.
Fellow Central Queensland stars Cameron Munster, Ben Hunt and Harry Grant are part of the Australian Kangaroos’ squad.
It has been a whirlwind ride for Robinson, who earned a late call-up to the Italian squad two days ago.
He will fly to Sydney early Friday where he will join teammates who will head to England that night.
“It’s pretty unreal. I just can’t wait to get over there and experience it all,” the 24-year-old said.
“I’m really grateful for this opportunity
“This will be my first international tournament. I’m really looking forward to the chance to recognise my heritage and be a part of that group and learn all I can from it.”
Robinson was named the Capras’ best back this year and said his World Cup selection capped off a special season.
“It‘s just overwhelming all the opportunities that lead off having a good season and I’m truly grateful for everything that’s happened this year,” he said.
Robinson played his club football with Rockhampton Brothers. He made the move to the Redcliffe Dolphins, where he played in the under-18 and under-20s, before returning home to join the Capras several years ago.
