The CQ Capras demonstrated the style of footy they want to play in their commanding win over the Brisbane Tigers on Saturday night, according to coach Lionel Harbin.
They ran out 34-20 winners in their Round 8 clash at Rockhampton’s Rugby Park, scoring seven tries, which included a double to winger Connor Rothery.
It was a welcome victory for the Capras, who have lost their past three games.
Harbin said his team was pretty dominant, despite a short lapse where they let Tigers back into the game and they closed the margin to just six points.
He was pleased with how his team bounced back from their surprise loss to the Souths Logan Magpies last weekend.
“For the majority of the game, we were pretty much in control,” Harbin said.
“There were some really good efforts from a lot of players.
“In the losses against Townsville and Burleigh we were still in those games and had opportunities to win them, whereas last weekend we were pretty disappointed with the way we performed.
“That wasn’t us and we just needed to get back to our type of footy and we did that last night.”
Three key takeaways from the win
Rock-solid defence
Harbin couple not speak highly enough of the team’s defensive effort.
“We went in with a really good attitude, winning the game with our defensive efforts.
“They scored in the last minute to make it a bit closer than what it was but our efforts in ‘d’ really set the platform for the win.”
Attacking flair
Harbin said the team’s attack was able to flow off the back of its hard work in defence.
“There were a couple of times in our last few games where we had opportunities to win it but we weren’t able to execute and get the job done.
“Last night, our attack looked a bit more fluent and guys in positions looked more organised and understood their roles a bit better.”
Dynamic duo
Harbin praised the ever-consistent duo of Nixon Putt and co-captain Blake Moore.
“Nixon really led the way with his carries out of the back end of the field.
“Blake started at halfback and I thought that was his best game of the year for us. He really took control of the team.”
