Carl Green is embarking on a new chapter in his rugby league coaching career as he takes on the Yeppoon Seagulls senior women in 2025.
He will be instrumental in rebuilding the team which returns to the Rockhampton Rugby League competition after a year’s absence.
This will be his first senior appointment after spending eight years coaching the club’s junior boys teams, and the past two at the helm of St Ursula’s College girls team at the Confraternity Carnival.
Green is excited for the role and the chance to foster female footy talent at the club.
The Yeppoon women have been strong contenders in the women’s ranks. They finished fifth in 2023 and contested the grand final in 2019.
“I’ve always coached kids aged up to 17 so this will be a first,” Green said.
“It’s another step forward for me as a coach.
“I’m forever learning and always trying to draw a lot from other coaches.
“There’s good support within the club and people there to help guide me.
“I get on well with (A-grade men’s coach) Shaun Goode; he’s always willing to help and I know I can call on his knowledge and experience.”
Green said another motivator for taking the job was to provide up-and-coming female talent, including his own accomplished daughters Dayna and Edie, with another goal to strive for.
His past two years coaching St Ursula’s open girls team had shown him the female players were like “sponges” - keen to learn and put into practice everything they were being taught.
Green said the make-up of the Yeppoon women’s team was something of an unknown at this stage but he was looking forward to the challenge of putting a competitive outfit on the park next year.
“It’s hard to have any sort of measure when we didn’t have a team this year,” he said.
“Obviously, I would like to have a successful season but a successful season is not always a winning season.
“I’m hoping for good numbers and a team that is competitive.
“Let’s get a team together, get the fundamentals right and let’s build from there and see where we get up to.”
Green is in for a busy year, also coaching Yeppoon’s under-16 boys and again taking the reins with St Ursula’s, who were runners-up in the Confraternity Trophy this year.
