A late three-try surge was not enough to get the CQ Capras home in their Intrust Super Cup clash with the Redcliffe Dolphins.

Trailing 18-6 at half-time, the Capras launched a steely fightback in the second half of the game played at Rockhampton’s Rugby Park on Sunday.

They ran in three tries between the 67th and 76th minute to narrow the margin to six and set the stage for a thrilling finish.

However, the Dolphins managed to repel their final attacking raids to win 30-24.

The Capras’ dynamic left edge shone in the second-half resurgence, with winger Cooper Marshall bagging a double.

Second rower Nixon Putt was rewarded for another big performance with a try, while Jedidiah Simbiken crossed for the team’s first points in the seventh minute.

Capras’ coach Guy Williams was impressed with his team’s comeback.

“We came really close there,” he said.

“I’m pleased with our ability to get back into the game and give ourselves a shot of possibly a draw or potentially to win it.

“We started quite well but there was that middle period of the game that let us down. We just made too many fundamental errors – we dropped the ball and we weren’t that resilient with our goal-line ‘d’ at times.

“That’s a bit disappointing but I’m pleased with the way we finished the game.”

Williams praised Caleb Tull who started the game at second row, a position he had not played before, and then moved to left centre where he proved dangerous with every touch.

Prop Bailey Butler was outstanding, and Putt produced his trademark powerhouse performance.

Joel Brown made his Capras debut after a courageous comeback from a torn ACL that he suffered in the first week of pre-season training.

Williams said his was an inspirational story.

“He’s a really resilient young guy and he worked his way through. He had a bit of a goal – it was actually next week was his goal to get back for – but he got an opportunity today and I was really pleased with the way he went.

“He came off the bench and played second row for us.

“That’s a really pleasing one for me, those guys who come back from those sorts of injuries.

“Joel was strong and he’ll get better each week.”
