Capras coach hunts one more recruit for 2017

The decision by dynamic forward Samson Graham to sign with the Redcliffe Dolphins has the Capras on the hunt for another experienced recruit for season 2017.

RUGBY LEAGUE: The decision by dynamic forward Samson Graham to sign with the Redcliffe Dolphins has the Rockhampton Leagues Club Capras on the hunt for another experienced recruit for season 2017.

Capras coach Kim Williams said while it was disappointing to lose a player of Graham's quality, he could understand his reasons for heading south.

"A club down there's offered him a very good deal. We're only a semi-professional competition and if there's a good offer on the table then you're silly not to look at it,” he said.

"I've been pretty comfortable with where the squad's at but now that we're into training and I've taken stock again I will probably look to recruit one more player.

"We've certainly got the numbers there in the forwards but it would be good to have one more experienced player in there. Samson was only one year into an Intrust Super Cup career but he was 26 and a senior player in this group.”

Williams admitted that recruitment opportunities would be limited given pre-season had already started, but he had already put in some calls to several players he thought would fit the bill.

"We'll just see how we go. If we don't get one I'm not overly worried but I think it would add to our squad,” he said.

While Graham's departure was unlikely to affect the style of play the coach had in mind for the Capras next year, it had firmed up the chances of Gavin Hiscox playing lock rather than in the front row.

The Capras are into their second week of pre-season training and Williams is happy with where they are at fitness-wise.

He is also pleased with the way they are gelling as a unit.

"There's a really good feeling amongst this group. I like the team dynamic; everyone seems to be getting on really well.

"I can see the signs already that this is going to be a pretty tight-knit group and I just hope they're willing to work really hard for each other.”

Prized recruit Krys Freeman, the son of New Zealand great Gary Freeman who comes to the Capras from the Newcastle Knights, said he too had felt the positive vibe in the player group.

"Definitely in training it feels like there's a lot of guys willing to step up and have their own little leadership roles within the group and there's definitely a lot of depth which is exciting,” the talented hooker said.

"I missed a fair bit of footy this year with injuries but I'm just excited to get back out there, lead the group around the field and really just put our best foot forward all year and be as competitive as possible.

"This business is performance and that's what it comes down to... you've just got to play your best week in, week out.”
