The Capras under-16s’ ability to maintain possession and complete their sets was what most impressed coach Duane Carpenter in the team’s weekend win.
The boys scored a 30-6 victory over the Northern Pride in the Cyril Connell Challenge at Browne Park on Saturday.
Centre Banjo Walker scored a double, while Cody Sanewski, Carter Ford and captain Tavita Penaia also crossed for four-pointers.
Halfback Isaac Walker was on target with the boot, landing all five conversions.
The Capras under-19 women were beaten 28-20 by the Northern Pride in a hard-fought clash, while the Capras under-18 boys were edged 22-18 by the Pride in a thriller.
Carpenter was impressed with how his players bounced back from their loss to the Mackay Cutters last weekend.
“Everyone was really disappointed last week but we showed a bit of professionalism, especially for kids this age,” he said.
“We took that on board, we reflected on last week but we moved on and we showed improvement for it and that’s all you can ask for.
“This week was about getting back to basics and showing improvement and we bounced back really well.
“We really wanted to complete our sets and hold possession and we did that which got us the result.
“That’s what we’re looking for - consistency.”
Carpenter said it was a “real team effort” but there were several players who stood out.
“Simon Green came off the bench and really added another dynamic in the middle for us so that opened up the game,” he said.
“I think Seth Carpenter at the back was really good for us, as well as our halves Clancy Hohn and Isaac Walker.
”Prop Baylee Meilland and second rower Jett Day really laid the platform for our go-forward all game.”
Penaia made special mention of dummy half Braelan Marsh’s performance.
“I’m stoked with that,” he said of the win.
“We definitely came back this week with a lot more strength and discipline.
“It felt really good out there.”
Carpenter said the win over the Pride would provide a great springboard for the team heading into Sunday’s away game against the Townsville Blackhawks.
“That’s going to be a tough one,” he said.
“This win is a great stepping stone leading into that game.
“We have a huge amount of depth this year, and we’re a much bigger side than we were last year.”
