Alton Downs cowboy Shane Iker will be looking to round out what has been a great year in the arena when he lines up at this week’s 2022 Ariat Australian Professional Rodeo Association national finals rodeo.

Iker, 45, finished as the 2022 APRA Pro Tour rope and tie champion and is keen to maintain the consistency that got him there in the four rounds of the finals to hold on to top spot and secure the prized buckle.

Central Queensland will be well represented at the three-day event, which runs from Thursday to Saturday at Gracemere CQLX.

Iker will be among more than 130 of rodeo’s finest in action in nine events.

“To take the Pro Tour title at this stage in my career means a lot, especially when you consider all the competition against me - from the up-and-coming to the seasoned competitor,” he said.

“I think I managed to take the title thanks to being there before, knowing what it takes to stay cool under pressure and not panic to get the job done.”

Iker said he was feeling “pretty good” and his horses were all in great condition.

The finals will be held from 6.30pm Thursday and Friday and from 11am on Saturday.
