The remote-operated cleaning truck eliminates working at heights. Now the out of the box invention is turning heads, and winning awards.

Jack Trenaman came up with the idea of a remote-operated cleaning truck three years ago and through the help of his team at SMW Group, the design came to life and has been a roaring success.

The product took out the win for the Out of the Box award at the 2021 Resource Industry Awards held in Mackay last month.

The SMW Group CEO said it was great to share with the rest of the industry some of the safety and time saving initiatives SMW had on board.

After Mr Trenaman came up with the concept, it went onto the design stage and working out the specific areas and industries this style of truck would be used in.

The project was shared among the various teams of SMW Group from the drafting team, to the workshop team that did the fit out and the field service and industrial cleaning team that put it to work.

“It took three years to come up with the final concept and 12 months to come up with what we have and have it manufactured and installed,” Mr Trenaman said.

The remote-operated cleaning truck is a new approach to industrial cleaning and was designed with safety at the forefront, in an effort to eliminate the risk for operator injury.

This has been achieved as the boom is operated remotely and the operator is on the ground, a safe distance away.

The high-pressure hot wash cleaning truck also eliminates working at heights as the operator no longer has to work from the basket.

It is used to clean excavators, shovels, tanks and over heavy equipment.

The truck is used in the Clean Team arm of the company, operated by the industrial cleaning staff.

After the success of the first, a second truck is now under construction. Both trucks will remain owned and operated by the SMW Group.

“We want to keep it in house because it is an idea that helps us increase our market share,” Mr Trenaman said.

SMW Group, which has bases in Rockhampton and Mackay and works from Weipa to Bundaberg, now has a workforce of around the mid 400s.

Mr Trenaman said it was a slower start to the year, as it had been across the resource sector, but work was now picking up.

“Since last month and this month onwards we have a busy calendar year left,” he said.

“All is going well and we will continue to keep getting busier and keep growing.”
