Rocky Stadium to be built at Victoria Park and completed by March 2023

The stadium will include grandstand seating up to 7,500 persons, an 800-seat ballroom and a multi-purpose sports field.

Spectators could be sitting inside the Rocky Stadium by early 2023 according to the latest announcement from Capricornia MP Michelle Landry.

The Federal Member announced in September last year the Australian Government would be committing $23 million towards the construction of the hotly debated stadium.

The $23 million is the full cost of the project.

This funding was confirmed this week by Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce would said it would provide a boost to the Central Queensland region through generating jobs and delivering infrastructure.

“The funding will deliver a multi-purpose venue capable of hosting major events, as well as being a local community and sporting hub,” Mr Joyce said.

The Rocky Stadium has been lobbied for years by co-president of Rocky Sports Club Gavin Shuker.

The stadium will include a grandstand which will seat up to 7,500 persons, an 800-seat ballroom and a multi-purpose sports field.

Construction is due to start at the end of this year.

The Morning Bulletin has previously reported the construction phase of the project would create up to 67 full-time jobs and inject over $44 million into the local economy.

Ms Landry said the new sporting venue will provide a space to host more local sporting clubs and entertainment.

“Not only will this new stadium stimulate the local economy and create jobs for years to come, it is expected to attract major events to the region, with flow-on effects expected for businesses large and small,” she said.

“The project is expected to be complete by March 2023 and I personally cannot wait to attend the first sporting event it holds.”

The tale of two stadiums has been a political footballs for years, with some parties vying for a stadium at Browne Park and others favouring Rocky Stadium at Victoria Park.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has been a staunch supporter of the Rocky Stadium, pledging funding in elections.

Browne Park will be hosting its first ever NRL game this week, with the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks vs West Tigers.

Another game will be held on Saturday August 28, with the St George Illawarra Dragons and North Queensland Cowboys.

The games were moved amid the COVID-19 outbreak across the cities in Sydney and Brisbane.
