A draft master plan has been unveiled, with Rockhampton’s “premier water sports precinct’ designed to snare the Australian Rowing Championships and the 2032 Olympic Training Camps.

The Ski Gardens features include cycle and pedestrian pathways, a playground, judging tower platform, spectator/hill seating and amenities, seating and tables, event space, car parking, recreation area and tree planting.

In the river, there are plans for held start point and distance markers upgrades at 500 and 250 metre intervals.

Rockhampton Ski Gardens will encompass the Fitzroy River from the southside boat ramp.

The Rockhampton Ski Gardens is a large open public space on the edge of the Fitzroy River, upstream of the barrage, around the Southside Boat Ramp in Wandal.

The site currently supports competitive and social water sports, events and recreation and has a number of public facilities including the playground, amenities, a boat ramp and car park.

It is the region‘s only rowing course alongside Rockhampton Grammar School’s rowing clubhouse and the Rockhampton Fitzroy Rowing Club sheds.

The draft master plan notes three priority projects - the first being an amenities building with showers and change rooms above flood level and close to the current facilities, for daily users and large events and regattas.

The second priority project is vehicular access and parking to kerb and channel the entire network, new formal parking spaces, overflow parking areas and upgrades to the existing road surface.

A judging tower platform will support competitive water sports and attract more significant events to the region.

The Ski Gardens area around the southside boat ramp is approximately 2km from the Rockhampton CBD.

The project documents note the precinct redevelopment should be capable of hosting local, state and national water sport events while encouraging passive and active recreation for land and water-based activities.

Targeted events for the redevelopment, including Brisbane schools rowing camps, QAS training camp (December/January), Queensland School State Championships (September), CQ State Championships (June), QLD State Masters Championships (April), Australian Masters Rowing Championships (May) and 2032 Olympic training camps.

The planning and design will need to consider flooding, drainage, environmental values, bushfire hazard and the adjoining residential areas.

A council budget has not been allocated to the redevelopment at this stage and this draft master plan will now be used to guide the long-term development subject to funding and grants.

Community consultation is planned to be conducted in the next few months through an online engagement platform, media and Facebook.
