Zane Sheedy caused a burnout smoke cloud that brought traffic to a standstill

Video footage of the incident which happened between Rockhampton and Emu Park was captured and another motorist thought the car was on fire.

A teenage driver brought traffic to a standstill when he did burnouts and the resultant large smoke cloud reduced visibility at an intersection to a dangerous level.

Zane Vawn Sheedy, 18, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on August 12 to one count of making unnecessary noise or smoke.

The court heard that on July 25 about 9.40am, police received a call from a female motorist who was driving towards Emu Park from Rockhampton on the 100kmh stretch.

She had to stop in the middle of the road because of a smoke cloud caused by Sheedy’s silver Holden Commodore doing burnouts at the intersection of Emu Park Rd and Tanby Rd.

The smoke was so thick that the woman thought Sheedy’s vehicle was on fire and other motorists also had to stop driving.

Video footage of the incident was captured and shown to police.

At the scene, officers saw fresh skid marks which were consistent with a vehicle doing burnouts.

Police later attended Sheedy’s residence where his vehicle was parked.

Sheedy made admissions to doing the burnouts and causing the traffic to stop.

Police impounded Sheedy’s car for 90 days.

Sheedy, a tyre fitter, represented himself in court and Magistrate Athol Kennedy asked him why he did this offending.

“I’m dumb. No reason, just being stupid, Your Honour,” was Sheedy’s reply.

Mr Kennedy took into account that Sheedy had no history before fining him $500.

There was no licence disqualification.
