A Capricorn Coast mother who is a repeat drug offender has been given a jail sentence after being busted with methamphetamines.
Brooke Haidee Thompson, 36, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on March 17 to possessing that drug.
The court heard that Thompson was the front passenger in a vehicle which was intercepted by police patrolling Appleton Drive, Yeppoon, on January 7.
During a search of Thompson’s backpack, police found a clip-seal bag containing 0.32g of methamphetamines.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said Thompson told police that she had never seen the clip-seal bag of drugs before, despite herself having packed the contents of her backpack.
In relation to Thompson’s criminal history, Sgt Ongheen said since 2019 there were “numerous offences connected to drug behaviour”, and she was on probation when she committed this latest offence.
Magistrate Cameron Press asked the probation officer present in court whether Thompson was complying with her probation.
The officer told Mr Press that Thompson had disengaged with probation.
Mr Press said the problem was, that Thompson kept getting probation.
“You were given probation in September of 2020 for drugs. You were given probation in June ‘21 - 12 months for drugs. You were given probation in November ‘21 and that was for carrying an exposed weapon in a public place - you were placed on six months’ probation. Now you’re back with methamphetamine.
“You’re not making any headway are you?”
A conversation followed between Thompson and Mr Press and the former said she did not know how the methamphetamine got into her bag.
A critical Mr Press asked: “Do you suspect it crawled in?”
The magistrate ultimately did not accept the submission that Thompson didn’t know the drug was in her bag.
Mr Press sentenced Thompson to four months’ jail, suspended for an operational period of 12 months.
