A young man who subjected him mum to shocking conduct, including threatening to commit suicide and “make her smell his dead body”, has been sentenced.
The 25-year-old pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court to contravening a domestic violence order.
The court heard that on January 15, police were called to a Yeppoon residence following a report the man was “highly agitated” inside the home.
Police prosecutor Mirren Smith said police found the man in the kitchen area.
“(He) appeared quite hysterical,” Ms Smith said.
The prosecutor said while police were attempting to “de-escalate” him, he told officers: “You better arrest me and take me away or I swear I’ll f***ing kill myself.”
The man was taken away and into custody.
Police then spoke to the man’s mum, the victim in the matter.
She told police that her son was aggressive and verbally abusive towards her on a regular basis.
She also said shortly before police arrived at the home, her son stood about 1m from her face, called her “a c***” and screamed at her repeatedly.
Ms Smith said the woman told police that her son had often made threats of self-harm during arguments and on one occasion he said to her that he would barricade himself in his bedroom, commit suicide and make her smell his dead body.
The prosecutor said the woman told police that she felt “trapped in her own home” and she often had to lock herself in a bedroom when it was just her and her son at home.
Solicitor Oscar Millroy said the man was employed and his mental health was “a constant management process.”
Mr Millroy said at the time of this offending, work for the man “was slow” and he “fell into a spiral of self-doubt.”
“He was drinking rather heavily.
“He certainly regrets his actions - he knows he should have sought appropriate means.
“He’s since moved out (of the home).”
Mr Millroy said the man’s employer was supportive of him and had arranged accommodation for him.
Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale fined the man $800 and a conviction was recorded.
