Yeppoon man Michael Rollin Adsett-Murfet made ‘disgusting’ sexual offers during vexatious Triple-0 call

A 19-year-old Central Queensland man made three calls to the emergency number but that was not the only stupid thing he did - it all started with him on the pavement on a Yeppoon main street.

A Yeppoon teenager made “disgusting” sexual offers during the first of three vexatious calls he made to Triple-0.

Michael Rollin Adsett-Murfet, 19, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on October 28 to that offence as well as one count of wilful damage.

The court heard that both of Adsett-Murfet’s offences happened in the early hours of October 6.

At 1.15am, police spoke to Adsett-Murfet on Yeppoon’s James St for 10 minutes.

When those conversations finished, officers watched the teenager as he walked up the street.

Police started speaking with another man when they heard glass smashing on the pavement about 20m away.

Police then drove up to Shop 2 of 26 James St where Adsett-Murfet was down on his knees, underneath a damaged light, cleaning up shattered glass.

Adsett-Murfet had jumped up to smash the light under the awning at Shop 2.

The light bulb fell from its housing and shattered all over the pavement, while the housing itself was left hanging from the roof with wires exposed.

Adsett-Murfet told police he had jumped to try and “headbutt the light” but he did not mean to smash it.

The light was inoperable due to the damage and the housing also had to be replaced - restitution was sought.

After being arrested, Adsett-Murfet was taken home at 2.10am.

Once there, he became abusive towards police before going inside the residence. Police drove off.

At 2.11am, Adsett-Murfet called Triple-0 from a mobile phone and told the operator he was “John Burgundy” of an address at Bondoola.

Adsett-Murfet was abusive towards the emergency call-taker and swearing, while complaining about two police officers who had “dropped him off”.

Adsett-Murfet said the officers had “bounced him around the van”.

He continued to swear and was warned not to do so.

Adsett-Murfet then made sexual offers to the emergency call-taker - those offers were declined.

The call-taker told Adsett-Murfet if he wished to make a complaint he could contact PoliceLink.

When the operator could not tolerate the abuse and swearing any more, the call was terminated.

The duration of Adsett-Murfet’s Triple-0 call was 16 minutes.

Adsett-Murfet then called Triple-0 straight back but this time provided his name as “Michael Adsett-Murfet” from Bondoola.

The same call-taker spoke with Adsett-Murfet but the teen continued to swear, again ignored warnings, and kept swearing.

The call was again terminated.

At 2.36am, Adsett-Murfet phoned Triple-0 a third time but that call was also terminated.

On October 12, police went to Adsett-Murfet’s residence to speak with him.

The teen told officers that he could not remember anything from the night in question as he’d consumed a bottle of rum before leaving his house and going out.

The court heard that Adsett-Murfet had no prior criminal history.

A solicitor said Adsett-Murfet worked at a retail store three days per week and he’d been employed there for almost four years.

The solicitor explained that Adsett-Murfet’s mother was in the court in support of him, and that he resided with her.

“He’s very remorseful - he has little memory of the incident due to the amount of alcohol that he had drunk,” the solicitor said.

Before handing down penalty, Magistrate Jason Schubert asked Adsett-Murfet to tell him why calling Triple-0 for non-genuine reasons was an offence.

The teen responded saying it might stop someone who was in trouble from being helped.

Mr Schubert said: “One hundred percent. And then you disgustingly made some sexual offers to the person on the Triple-0 line.

“Which is not what you want your mum to hear, sitting in the back of the court.”

Mr Schubert fined Adsett-Murfet $700 and ordered he pay $375.40 restitution.

The magistrate exercised his discretion and did not record a conviction, based on Adsett-Murfet’s youth and him having no prior history.

It was not the first time a Capricorn Coast youngster has found themselves in trouble recently for calling Triple-0.

Kyle Douglas Beckwith, 29, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on August 26 to making the three vexatious calls to the emergency number.
