Stepdad accused of showing child porn film, masturbating in front of her and touching her genitals

A young girl has accused her stepfather of sexually abusing her.

A man is accused of exposing his stepdaughter to a pornographic film, exposing his genitals and touching her inappropriately.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has pleaded not guilty in Rockhampton District Court to three counts of indecent treatment of a child under 12.

Crown prosecutor Caitlin Penfold said the alleged victim was 11 years old when she told a friend in the girls’ toilets at school of the secrets she’d been keeping about her stepfather.

She said police became involved and the child alleged her stepfather had been watching a video on his phone which he told her to watch with him.

Ms Penfold told the jury the girl claimed this took place when other family members had left the house.

She said that about five minutes later, the child became uncomfortable and went to her room where, she alleged, her stepfather followed and exposed his genitals.

Ms Penfold said the girl alleged the defendant masturbated in front of her and she told him to do it elsewhere.

She said it was alleged the defendant responded that she, the child, was not helping him and he did not stop until they heard noises which indicated others had arrived home.

Ms Penfold said the next alleged incident took place sometime after Christmas, with the girl recalling her mother and stepfather were downstairs entertaining visitors.

She said the child alleged the defendant would come upstairs periodically and see her and allegedly first touched her upper thigh, then touched her underneath her pyjamas on her vagina.

“She told him to stop and wrapped herself tightly in a blanket,” Ms Penfold said.

The girl’s mother gave evidence in the trial, telling the jury the background of the relationship between the stepfather and the rest of the family members.

She said sometime around Christmas, her daughter told her that the stepfather had shown her “an adult video where they were doing rude things to each other” and that her stepfather was “playing with himself”.

The mother said she confronted the defendant.

She told the jury the defendant looked confused about the adult video allegations and went on to say he did not realise the child was near him at the time and promised to be more careful in the future.

The defendant’s barrister asked the mother what she did after her daughter made these allegations.

The mother told the jury she watched her daughter’s behaviour when she was around the defendant the following weeks and noted her behaviour seemed normal and did not see anything that caused concerns

She said not long afterwards, she and her children moved out.
