A man accused of assaulting a woman has made a bid for freedom in a Rockhampton court. Here’s how it went.

National plan to end domestic violence

A man accused of kicking a woman in the jaw has applied for bail in a Rockhampton court, claiming he wanted to get his affairs in order.

Robert William Bulsey made a bail application in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on July 20 after being charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

Magistrate Jason Schubert said the allegations included Bulsey pushing the victim to the ground and dragging her by the collar which caused her knees to be grazed.

He said it was further alleged after pushing her to the ground a second time, Bulsey kicked her in the jaw, causing immediate pain.

Mr Schubert said Bulsey was allegedly pulled away by a witness while another witness tried to protect the victim.

“The defendant allegedly brushed the witness off and kicked the victim in the back of the head,” Mr Schubert said.

Defence lawyer Ken Spinaze said his client accepted he would likely receive an 18-month prison term when sentenced due to his criminal record and he would likely serve at least one third of that term, however, he wanted bail before sentencing to “get his affairs in order”.

Mr Spinaze said his client wanted to see his two children who had travelled with their mother from Innisfail to Rockhampton prior to his arrest.

Mr Spinaze said Bulsey also wanted to continue providing emotional support to his brother who had recently lost a child.

Police prosecutor Courtney Brown said police objected to Bulsey being granted bail due to his history of violence and concerns about the safety of the victim.

Mr Spinaze said his client was willing to live in a different town to the victim, have no contact with her and wear a GPS tracker.

However, Mr Schubert determined no conditions could mitigate the risk the defendant would reoffend.

Bulsey’s bail application was refused, he was remanded in custody and his matters were set down for a long plea on August 18.
