Portmoresbey Cecil murder charge: DNA report outstanding

A Rockhampton law firm is reviewing the brief of evidence gathered in the alleged murder of a grandmother by her estranged son-in-law.

A Rockhampton law firm is reviewing the brief of evidence gathered in the alleged murder of a grandmother by her estranged son-in-law.

Rockhampton Magistrates Court was provided an update on March 29 in the case where Portmoresbey (BJ) Cecil, 35, has been charged with the murder of Sue Duffy, 71, who died in her West Street, Allenstown, home on August 21, 2022.

It will be alleged Mrs Duffy sustained “substantial injuries”, believed to be caused by a bladed instrument.

Defence lawyer Rebecca Harris from McGowran and Cagney Lawyers, said her colleague, Grant Cagney, had carriage of the case and was currently reviewing the brief of evidence and wished to brief counsel before the next mention in court.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said there was a DNA statement outstanding.

Mr Cecil is also charged with one count of possessing property suspected having being used in a drug offence, one of possessing a dangerous drug and one of wilful damage which were also mentioned on March 29.

Magistrate Cameron Press adjourned Mr Cecil’s matters until May 31.
