Police use stingers to stop stolen car at town on Bruce Hwy

Three people are facing a string of charges after two vehicles were allegedly stolen 500km apart.

Police used stingers to stop the second of the cars at Gin Gin on Tuesday afternoon, ending the incident which started with the alleged theft of a 2019 BMW X1 in Brisbane on Monday night.

What followed were reports of erratic highway driving, two males allegedly brandishing a replica firearm in their failed attempt to steal another car and the deployment of the dog squad to round up one of the three alleged offenders.

The BMW was reportedly seen by members of the public about 12.30pm Tuesday, driving dangerously on the Bruce Highway northbound between Tiaro and Torbanlea.

It was then observed by police about 2.30pm being driven dangerously in Childers, Gin Gin and Miriam Vale.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the BMW stopped at a Benaraby caravan park where two males, allegedly armed with a replica firearm, attempted to steal another vehicle.

The pair then fled the caravan park in the BMW.

“An 18-year-old woman allegedly fled from the BMW on foot and was taken into custody by police a short time later,” the spokesperson said.

“It will be alleged the male persons then travelled to a Benaraby service station, where they abandoned the BMW and allegedly stole a 2011 Proton Gen.2.

“The Proton travelled southbound on the Bruce Highway for a period of time before police successfully deployed a tyre deflation device.”

The spokesperson said the Proton came to a stop at a Gin Gin service station, where an 18-year-old man was taken into custody.

The other male fled on foot, allegedly attempting to steal two more vehicles.

The dog squad was deployed, and the 17-year-old was found nearby and taken into custody.

The spokesperson said no one was physically injured during the alleged offences.

An 18-year-old Redcliffe woman has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and is due to face Gladstone Magistrates Court on February 6.

A 18-year-old Boondall man has been charged with four counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, three counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle, enter dwelling and commit, two counts of attempted enter dwelling, stealing, and one count each of attempted robbery, enter premises and commit indictable offence, evasion, armed robbery whilst armed with a dangerous weapon.

His bail was refused and he was to face Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

A 17-year-old from Brisbane has been charged with three counts of stealing, two counts of attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and one count each of attempted armed robbery whilst armed with a dangerous weapon, armed robbery whilst armed with a dangerous weapon, enter dwelling and commit, receiving tainted property.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Bundaberg Children’s Court.
