Police are investigating a break-in at the historic St Paul’s Cathedral in Rockhampton and the possibility that more than one person was involved.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said initial investigations indicated unknown offenders gained entry to the church on William Street, between 1pm on Saturday (March 22) and 6.30am on Sunday (March 23).

“Anyone who may have witnessed the break-in or has vision of suspicious behaviour in the area is urged to contact police,” the QPS spokesman said.

No details were available as to whether anything was stolen during the incident.

St Paul’s Cathedral is heritage-listed and had its foundation stone laid in 1897.

In 1954, Queen Elizabeth II visited the cathedral, gifting the parish a stained glass window which still features on the wall.

The Anglican Church’s St Paul’s Cathedral website says the building is “one of the jewels of Central Queensland”.

“It may not be the best-known Gothic Cathedral in Australia, it is certainly not the biggest, but it delights its many residents and visitors alike,” the website says.
