A methamphetamines addict abandoned in a shelter after being orphaned at the age of six has been jailed after assaulting her neighbour and police, as well as drug driving.

Paris Ann Blurton, 38, has a history of using meth and assaulting police, Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard.

Magistrate Cameron Press said Blurton’s criminal history included a district court sentence for assaulting five officers while high on meth and heavily pregnant.

This time, Blurton attended her neighbour’s place and asked to use their phone.

Police prosecutor Corey O’Connor said when she was refused and was told to leave the property, Blurton picked up the neighbour’s phone and threw it on the ground.

“As the victim bent over to pick up his phone, the defendant struck him on the left side of his head with a closed hand,” he said.

“The victim stood up and raised his hands in preparation for a fight and withdrew behind his vehicle.

“The defendant picked up a copper rod from the garden and struck the sidestep of the victim’s vehicle.

“The victim was angered by this and stepped forward toward the defendant, pushing her with two hands.

“The defendant swung the copper rod and struck the victim on the left side of his ribs and across his face, causing immediate pain and a laceration to the bridge of his nose.”

Mr O’Connor said the victim’s glasses were also damaged.

He said when police located Blurton, they were unable to question her due to her “ongoing behavioural issues”.

Blurton was busted drug driving after a two-vehicle crash at the Berserker and Guymer Streets intersection in Frenchville on November 5, 2023, at 11.53am.

Mr O’Connor said Blurton was trapped in the Mitsubishi Lancer she was driving and she was taken to hospital where gave a specimen of blood.

The blood test results showed she had amphetamines, meth and an antipsychotic medication.

Blurton also seriously assaulted public officers while at the hospital.

Mr O’Connor said Blurton told police she had consumed ‘ice’ three days prior to the crash.

Defence lawyer Samantha Legrady said her client was introduced to drugs at an early age after becoming an orphan at age six and living in a shelter or on the streets since she was 15 years old.

“Methamphetamine became a big issue for Miss Blurton at the age of 16,” she said.

Ms Legrady said her client has been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, bipolar disorder, postpartum psychosis and schizoaffective disorder.

She said Blurton received NDIS funding prior to going into custody, had been engaged with Drug Arm and a psychologist.

Ms Legrady said her client instructed she wasn’t taking her oral medication at the time of the offending, but had adhered to her depo injection schedule.

She said Blurton also advised she was using marijuana and “was in a delusional state”.

Mr O’Connor said Blurton’s history also contained two convictions for assault occasioning bodily harm, two common assaults and five serious assaults.

Blurton pleaded guilty to one count each of assaulting a police officer, assaulting a public officer, drug driving, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and wilful damage in the magistrates court on August 26.

She was sentenced to 18 months prison with 122 days presentence custody declared as time served and parole eligibility set for August 26.

Blurton was also disqualified from driving for four months.

Convictions were recorded.
