Meth addict Jessie Mott’s struggles laid bare in Yeppoon court

A dad who has struggled to deal with personal tragedy in his life was dependent on meth because it “blocks out everything that’s happened”.

Looking at a magistrate and a possible jail term, Jessie Lee Mott summed up his meth addiction with one sentence.

“It just blocks out everything that’s happened, which helps,” he said.

The 38-year-old dad’s struggles with the highly addictive drug methamphetamine were laid bare in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on November 9.

There, Mott pleaded guilty to numerous drug offences including multiple counts of possessing meth and cannabis, as well as stealing and seven breaches of bail.

The court heard that Mott was busted at Yeppoon with 3.73g of meth and 55g of cannabis.

It was told the stealing charge related to him attending Capricorn Coast Hospital where he gained access to a needle dispensary and stole a lock that was attached to it.

Solicitor Krissy Cummins said Mott was a father of one who had relapsed after personal tragedy.

“He lost his brother in October last year in a motorbike accident,” Ms Cummins said.

She said Mott was very close with his brother and he had struggled with that loss.

Ms Cummins said Mott, who was on Jobseeker Allowance, had sought help for his drug issues through Drug ARM (rehab).

It was after Ms Cummins made her submission, and before Magistrate Grace Kahlert handed down penalty, that a frank Mott looked at the magistrate and said: “It (meth) just blocks out everything that’s happened, which helps.”

Ms Kahlert responded by saying meth was a terrible, illegal drug that not help long-term.

She noted that Mott, with a four-and-a-half page criminal history, had previously been given a jail sentence for drug offending (with immediate parole release).

She also said it was to Mott’s credit that he’d recognised he had a problem and engaged with Drug ARM - a factor that would influence her sentencing.

Ms Kahlert placed Mott on two years’ probation with conditions including drug testing.

Convictions were recorded.
