A Rockhampton man has faced court for the first time in relation to the death of two people in a crash at Stanwell in October. Among those killed was Maryborough nurse Ray Wyeth and patient Martyn House.

Stanwell fatal crash

A Rockhampton man spent the night in the watchhouse on Tuesday after he was charged over the death of 65-year-old Maryborough nurse Ray Wyeth and 87-year-old Martyn House following a fatal traffic crash at Stanwell in October.

It is alleged Timothy Lee Wilson, 41, was the driver of a truck heading east on the Capricorn Highway, Stanwell, just after midday on October 11, when it collided with the rear of an ambulance that was stationary at a roadwork traffic light.

The incident allegedly caused extensive damage to the ambulance and pushed it off the roadway where it then rolled.

Two passengers, Mr Wyeth and patient Mr House, who were in the back of the ambulance, died at the scene.

Mr Wilson was transported to the Rockhampton Hospital in a serious condition.

The ambulance driver and two additional passengers were also transported to the Rockhampton Hospital for treatment.

Mr Wilson, from The Range, was charged on Tuesday with two counts of dangerous operation of motor vehicle causing deaths.

He faced Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Wednesday where he was given bail.

His defence lawyer was Rowan King of RK Law.

It is understood prosecution opposed the bail and there was some argument around the stop signs for the roadworks.

The court heard Mr Wilson sustained a hole in his skull as well as feet and knee injuries in the incident.

It has been confirmed there was no mechanical fault with the truck.

It is understood results are still outstanding for toxicology tests, to determine if Mr Wilson allegedly had any alcohol or drugs in his system at the time of the crash.

He is due to appear in court again on January 19.
