A young man has been arrested and charged following a spree of alleged property offences in Emerald and Maryborough, which included a terrifying start to Christmas for an elderly woman.

It is alleged the 20-year-old Maryborough man broke into a property on Aberdeen Avenue at Maryborough at 3.50am on Christmas Day last year, where he demanded an 82-year-old woman’s handbag.

The woman activated a personal alarm before the man allegedly fled.

But the alleged offending didn’t stop there.

About 8am that same day, the man arranged to purchase a motorbike from a Toogoom man at a Burrum St property.

He allegedly took the bike for a test ride and never returned.

It’s further alleged that between 4.30pm on February 7 and 6am on February 8, the man drove a Nissan Navara to a worksite on Calcedony Rd at Emerald where he filled with car with diesel.

He then allegedly entered an office on the site by breaking the padlock before stealing a number of items.

The car and stolen items were later found at an address in Comet.

About 8.30pm Sunday (February 12) police from the Gladstone Property Crime Squad went to a business on the Dawson Highway at Calliope, where they spoke to the alleged offender.

It is alleged the man gave police a false name.

It’s further alleged upon challenging the 20-year-old man and placing him under arrest, he ran at one of the officers and became involved in a physical altercation before being restrained.

It will be further alleged that checks later conducted on the man’s licence identified him as being disqualified from driving by the courts.

The man was charged with one count of enter dwelling with intent by break at night, one count of unlawful use of motor vehicle, three counts of serious assault police officer, one count of enter premises and commit indictable offence by break and two counts of driving a motor vehicle while disqualified.

His bail was objected to, and he was expected to appear in Gladstone Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon.

Investigations are continuing.
